How to choose an Airbnb cover photo that gets more clicks

2026-06-15

On Airbnb and Booking, guests scan a grid of thumbnails before reading a single word. Your cover photo is that thumbnail. It does more for your booking rate than any other single image — so it's worth choosing deliberately.

Lead with brightness and space

The winning cover almost always looks bright, open and inviting. Usually that's the living room or a standout bedroom shot in good light, framed wide enough to show the room flows. Dark, cramped or cluttered covers get scrolled past even when the place is great.

Show the "hero" feature

If your stay has a signature — a view, a pool, a fireplace, a designer kitchen — and it photographs well, that's a strong cover. Guests book the feeling of a place; lead with the thing that creates it.

Make it readable at thumbnail size

Your cover is seen tiny first. Test it: shrink the image on your screen. Can you instantly tell what room it is and that it looks good? If it's busy or ambiguous at small size, pick a cleaner shot.

Keep it honest

A cover that oversells — wide-angle distortion, fake skies, a brightened room that looks nothing like reality — wins the click but loses the review. Disappointed guests and platform penalties cost far more than a click. Enhance the real room; don't invent a better one.

Get the cover right in two minutes

Pick your best candidate, then make sure it's at its honest best — bright, true colour, straight walls. That's what StayLuma does to a single photo in about two minutes. Start with your cover, see real examples, and check the pricing when you're ready to do the whole gallery.
